Portable appliance testing (PAT) is the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use. Although many types electrical safety defects can be found by visual examination some can only be found by testing.
People who qualify as PAT Testers undertake formal visual inspection and testing of electrical equipment at appropriate intervals. To become a PAT Tester you do not need to be a qualified electrican, many building and facilities management personnel choose to study and qualify to become PAT Testers.
The Electacourse PAT Testing study material is aimed to support people as they work towards qualification, it does not include the final exam. It is a requirement that to qualify as a person competent to undertake PAT testing, you take City & Guilds 2377-22 examination. This exam is available from exam centres throughout the UK, details available from the City & Guilds website.
