What you will learn in this course

After you have studied this course you will

  1. be familiar with all aspects of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
  2. know how and where to quickly locate critical information in the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
  3. understand the structure of the 2382 exam
  4. have had the opportunity to practice exam questions

Practice Tests

This course includes unlimited access to the practice test. The practice test at the end of the course includes over 1,000 questions of the type you might expect in the actual 2382-18 exam. Each time you do the practice test 60 questions are pulled at random from the database. Of course the more you practice the more often you might begin to recognise the same question again.

The functionality of the practice test is the same as that of the actual City & Guilds exam, but the ‘look and feel’ – the way the screen looks, is quite different. Later in this course we show you what you might expect the City & Guilds 2382 exam screens to look like.

Introduction to the 18th Edition

The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations is a big book: it is over 450 pages long and covers thousands of regulations.

Some courses try to teach this material using videos, animations and other multi-media methods. Although such media can help students understand the principles of electrical installations, they may not directly address the requirements of the 2382 exam – how to find your way around the Wiring Regulations.

As the exam is open book and is designed to test your understanding of how to find out information about the regulations which cover your day to day work, no amount of entertaining animations or videos are going to help you get to know your way round the densely packed 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.

Unlike courses which are undertaken over a few intense days at a training centre – which is the way many people prefer to study, this course gives you the opportunity to study at your own pace and in your time to give you the best opportunity of understanding the Regulations and to passing the 2382 exam.

This course is designed to draw your attention to the critical areas of the Regulations, to indicate what has changed in the 18th Edition and to prepare you for the exam. You will complete the course secure in the knowledge you know how to locate and apply relevant regulations in your daily work. This secure knowledge will give you the best chance of achieving a good pass at the 2382-22 examination.

If you do not already have a copy of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations Brown Book, then you need to buy one now. No 18th Edition Course works unless you have a copy of the latest edition of BS7671 Wiring Regulations.

Organisation of this course

This Electacourse 18th Edition course is organised into four sections:

1. Introduction

A short introduction to the BS7671 Wiring Regulations and the history of the Regulations

2. Exam Success

Detailed topics about what to expect in the exam, how the exam is organised and techniques you can use to maximise your chance of success (it seems to work, we had a pass rate of 99.6% on the 17th and 18th Editions)

3. Regulations

This is the largest section of the course. This section has lessons and topics which go through details of the Regulations. We highight those regulations which our experience shows us most commonly come up in the exam.

All the lessons are  aligned closely to the Parts which make up the general structure of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. Within each Part, there are topics, each of which covers a discrete, bite size set of the Regulations. We recommend you study one topic at a time and once you have completed a topic, take a break. If you wish you can study more than one topic a day.

Some of the topics are quite short. But if you do take more than one topic at a time, avoid extending yourself. Too much time spent studying can lead to lack of a concentration and prevents good learning of the information contained in each topic.

4. Practice questions

Each of the main Parts have small practice tests to help you confirm you have begun to learn where and how to locate in the Regulations answers to the question.

At the end of the course is a timed Practice Exam. The questions are delivered in random order.

In the actual City & Guilds 2382 exams there have been times when the questions have been presented in random order and at other times they are presented sequentially in the same order as the chapters of the Regulations. At present the 2382 exam question order is sequential, but it is wise to be prepared for them to be random.

We keep our presentation of questions in the Practice Test as random. We do this for two reasons:

  1. At any time City & Guilds may change the actual exam order from sequential to random
  2. A random practice test is harder than a sequential test. When referring to the Regs to find the answer for a random question, a candidate will learn more of the Regs than they would, by the question order sign-posting where in the Regs, the answer would be.
