Listen to audio stream

The aim of this course is to prepare candidates for the City & Guilds 2382 examination. An electrician passing the 2382 is known as 18th Edition Qualified. You will be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the British Standards BS7671 Wiring Regulations, as they relate to wiring and electrical installations.

All electricians practising in the UK need to understand the Wiring Regulations. You need to have the knowledge to reference BS7671 in order to carry out your work to a professional standard. It is unlikely an electrician can get a job in the UK, without being 18th Edition qualified.

Certified proof of your understanding of the Wiring Regulations provides protection in case you are ever involved in a professional dispute.

Course Updates

The life cycle of the Wiring Regulations is typically about 8 years from one Edition to another. The 18th Edition was published in 2018. New Editions are published to keep pace with changes in the Electrial Installation industry. Some significant changes in recent history are: change of wiring colours, medical locations, solar energy and EV charging. We might expect the 19th Edition to be published some time after 2025.

From time to IET and British Standards Institute will issue updates to the Regulations which are covered in the current edition of BS7671. We keep this course material up-to-date to whatever changes are made. The significance of the changes have different levels of application and names.

Corrigendum – These are very minor corrections such as spelling and printing errors. Electacourse update the course in the background whenever a corrigendum is issued.

Minor Amendment –  A minor amendment introduces regulation or guidance which electrical installers should have notice of as soon as practical. The last minor Amendment was BS7671 Amendment 1 which was published in 2020. This minor Amendment continued to be examined by 2382-18.

Major Amendment – In the life cycle of an Edition, there will typically be at least one major amendment. The next major Amendment has now been published and is  known as Amendment 2:2022. The City & Guilds exam is 2382-22.
